The Cake that Launched a Thousand Ships! Smith Island Baking Company most popular offering and Maryland’s State Dessert, this classic Smith Island Cake has layers of moist yellow cake and homemade fudge frosting.

The Smith Island Cake is the State Dessert of Maryland, beloved since the 1800s, when watermen from the remote fishing village of Smith Island would set out for months on end for the autumn oyster harvest. Their families would send them out with one of these layer cakes to remind them of the community they left behind. It remains a delicious centerpiece at celebrations throughout the state, and Smith Island Baking Company, founded by Brian and Joy Murphy in 2009 just a stone’s throw from Smith Island, is turning out faithful renditions made with only real, high-quality ingredients in a wide variety of flavors.
