Smith Island Baking Company
The Iconic State Dessert from Maryland's Eastern Shore
Since the 1800’s, Smith Island Cakes, Maryland’s State Dessert, have been a symbol of family, faith, and togetherness. As legend goes, when Smith Island watermen would set out for months on end for the autumn oyster harvest, their families would send them with Smith Island Cakes to remind them of the community they left behind. With alternating layers of super thin, made-from-scratch cake and frosting, Smith Island Cakes remain a delicious centerpiece for celebrations of all sizes and shapes.
In 2009, Brian and Joy Murphy founded the Smith Island Baking Company with the bold vision of sharing this iconic treasure with the world. They started a tiny bakery on Smith Island, an island with only 200 residents, located 10 miles off-shore and accessible only by ferry. Today, Smith Island Baking Company continues to act as custodians of this treasure from nearly Crisfield, called “the closest point to Smith Island without getting wet.” Each of their cakes are made with real, high-quality ingredients, and remain faithful to the oldest recipes and techniques. Popular cake flavors include Original Chocolate, Pumpkin, Lemon, Strawberry and even Old Bay along with samplers and irresistible Cake Bites, and they're all shipping nationwide on Goldbelly!
