Economy Candy is a neighborhood staple on the Lower East Side as well as a national purveyor of sweetness and joy. It started off as a shoe and hat repair shop, but when the Depression hit, the candy started outselling the shoes, so in 1937 Economy Candy was born. When Morris Cohen and his brother-in-law returned from World War II, they took over the family business and expanded its offerings. Today, it’s run by Cohen’s grandson Mitchell and his wife, Skye. Locals and tourists alike flock to Economy Candy to stock up on their favorites. With over 2,000 varieties of candy, chocolate, dried fruits and nuts on offer, there’s something for everyone!
