Originating from Palermo, Italy, cannolis have been part of Sicilian Italian tradition since the Arabian empire and were specifically made for Carnevale (a festival right before lent and is similar to Mardi Gras) and were often used to highlight local/native products, ingredients, and dishes.
Traditionally, cannolis were filled with either a flavored and sweetened mascarpone or ricotta mix, however in the USA, the filling developed into a sweetened ricotta cream - most likely due to factors such as food costs, immigrants’ low incomes and product availability when the dessert first migrated to the states. We hope you enjoy Chef Antonia’s miniaturized version made with mini chocolate chips!
