In 1946, Italian immigrants Rosario and Antonia Ricobene opened a Chicago restaurant selling sausage sandwiches, tamales, and a handful of other items to supplement the income they made from their fruit and vegetable truck. In the 1970s, three of their sons took over the restaurant, and in 1976 they decided to add a sandwich to the menu that would become their signature item: the Breaded Steak Sandwich.

The sandwich has since become one of Chicago’s most legendary foods – often imitated, never replicated. To make this Italian-American icon, USDA Choice skirt steak is tenderized, hand-breaded with a special blend of Italian seasonings, fried, dipped into slow-simmered savory red sauce, tucked into a fresh-baked roll from Chicago’s famed Turano Baking Co., and topped with melty mozzarella cheese and giardiniera (the city’s signature zesty, spicy relish). One bite and you’ll understand why USA Today called it “The Best Sandwich in the World”!

This package serves 8-12 people and includes

  • 6 pcs. Breaded Steak (40 oz. Total)
  • 2 jars Red Sauce (each 16 oz.)
  • 1 jar Giardiniera (14 oz.)
  • Mozzarella Cheese (16 oz.)
  • 6 Rolls (20 oz. Total)
  • Each roll measures 6” x 3” x 2”
  • Kit ships frozen with ice packs, may thaw in transit.
  • Upon arrival, store steaks and sauce in the freezer for up to 2 months.
  • Store giardiniera and mozzarella in the refrigerator to thaw.
  • Steaks and sauce may be thawed before cooking and stored for a maximum of 3 days. If kept frozen, can be stored for up to 2 months.
  • Bread may be stored at room temperature for up to 5 days or frozen for up to 1 month.
  • Steaks may be cooked from frozen or thawed.

To Serve

  • Thaw sauce and cheese in the refrigerator overnight.
  • Once cheese has thawed, open bag and fluff the shredded cheese to separate.
  • Empty the sauce into a 2-quart pot and bring to a simmer. Allow to simmer, stirring frequently for 5-10 minutes or until sauce reaches 165° F.
  • Remove steaks from plastic bag, remove plastic and paper separating the pieces of steak.
  • Lay pieces of steak on a sheet pan in a single layer. Do not stack.
  • Place in a preheated oven at 375° F.
    • If frozen, cook for 10 minutes, flip, then allow to cook for 3-5 more minutes or until it reaches 165° F.
    • If thawed, cook for 8 minutes, flip, then allow to cook for 2-3 more minutes or until it reaches 165° F.
  • Bread may be eaten straight from the bag or reheated in the oven for the best texture and flavor. Place bread in preheated oven at 375° F for 4-5 minutes.
  • Slice bread and assemble sandwich, dip Breaded Steak in the Red Sauce, then Breaded Steak goes on the bread first, next top with Cheese, Giardiniera, and more Red Sauce to taste.
