Olga's Kitchen

Detroit’s Greek Icon Since 1970

Olga’s Kitchen has been a Michigan icon for more than 50 years. Back in the 1960s, Olga Loizon and her three small children took a trip to visit family in Greece, and she was inspired by a taste of souvlaki – meat and vegetables wrapped in a fresh-baked pita – to open her own Greek restaurant. She purchased a vertical rotisserie, spent years perfecting her recipes for gyro meat and soft, fluffy pita bread, took out a loan to lease a 10’x10’ storefront in the Detroit suburb of Birmingham, Michigan (the first woman to do so), and in 1970, Olga’s Kitchen was born.

Olga passed away at age 92 in 2019, but her legacy lives on at the more than 25 locations of Olga’s Kitchen across Michigan and Illinois and with the Olga Loizon Memorial Foundation, which provides grants to women entrepreneurs. Her signature Olga Bread, which they’ve dubbed “The Best Bread on the Planet,” is at the heart of many of their signature menu items, from their signature Olga Sandwiches piled high with gyro meat, tomato, onion, and creamy Olgasauce to crunchy seasoned Olga’s Snackers. These legendary creations have become Detroit-area icons, and now they’re being delivered to doorsteps nationwide!
