The Oldest Ice Cream Shop in America

Bassetts Ice Cream was founded by Lewis Dubois Bassett way back in 1861, making it America’s oldest ice cream company, and it was the first merchant to sign a lease at Philly’s famed Reading Terminal Market in 1892. The ice cream shop is still run by the Bassett family today, and still serving up scoops at its original market stall.

This isn’t any old ice cream. This is about as “super-premium” as it gets, with a 16.5% butterfat percentage giving it a seriously smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Flavors run the gamut from butterscotch vanilla to peanut butter swirl and salted caramel pretzel, and are made with high-end ingredients like North Carolina peanuts, Guatemalan coffee and Madagascar bourbon vanilla beans. One scoop and you’ll be hooked — just like Philadelphians have been for generations.
