Nebraskan Comfort Food From a James Beard American Classic

In a world focused on speed and convenience, Embers Bakery is committed to handcrafted products made with locally sourced ingredients. What began as Sehnert's Bakery in 1957 is now Embers Bakery, with the same recipes that date back to the 1600s and a commitment to quality just as long-standing, but with a new name that showcases their belief in the power of small, glowing pieces to light up an entire room. Located in southwest Nebraska, they source our flour from Kansas and their sugar comes from western Nebraska through the Western Sugar Cooperative. In 2019, the bakery was honored by the James Beard Foundation with their prestigious America’s Classics Award for their signature bieroc.

Embers is renowned for its wide variety of breads, pastries, and other baked goods, but it’s best-known for its bieroc. The Sehnert family, German by descent, settled in the same areas as Germans from Russia, who originated the bieroc and brought it to the Midwest. Taught by the Sehnert family, their bieroc is made with ground beef infused with a secret seasoning blend, sauerkraut or cabbage, and their homemade crusty bread dough. The Embers bieroc leaves the ends of its bread open, resulting in flavorful meat in every bite. They’re still made by hand today, shipping from the heart of the Golden Plains right to your door!
